Although Tesla Motors has received most of the attention recently, there's another cool new electric car now making its' debut in California, and it's surprisingly familiar looking. Phoenix Motorcars is manufacturing electric cars that look and drive just like most on the road, at a price within reach of many auto buyers.

The company has two models, the SUV truck and classic SUV. The vehicles are actually standard production models from Korean automaker SsangYong. Phoenix Motorcars purchases the vehicles from SsangYong without an internal combustion engine and drivetrain, and then adds batteries and a motor in its factory in Ontario, California.

The cars feature breakthrough battery technology from Altairnano. The lithium-ion batteries use lithium titanate spinel oxide, instead of graphite for the anode, which delivers some strong benefits. First, the company claims that the batteries will last for 10,000 charges, or for more than 27 years of daily charging. The batteries also deliver a charge in extreme cold and warm temperatures, from 22 below to above 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

The batteries also take charge quickly. The entire car can be recharged in just ten minutes via a special charging station. The range is about 135 miles, which is more than enough for a daily commute, or running around town, but not for longer trips. However, the company envisions a network of fast charging stations built along major freeways in California; the first one will be installed in San Jose later this year.

For 2008/2009, Phoenix is targeting fleet operators in the State of California, particularly electric utility companies, universities, and municipal and state fleet operators. In 2010, Phoenix Motorcars will be making both their all-electric Sport-Utility Truck (SUT) and SUV available for public purchase. You can reserve yours now at Phoenix Motorcars - Reservations
